CPT® CODE 99453: Setting up Remote Patient Monitoring
When the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services released the three key Remote Patient Monitoring reimbursement codes, they wanted to make it as easy as possible for practices to sign up chronically ill patients.
They did not want the costs of signing patients to deter using Remote Patient Monitoring. As such, they released CPT® Code 99453 specifically for: “Remote monitoring of physiologic parameter(s) (e.g., weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, respiratory flow rate), initial; set-up, and patient education on the use of equipment.”
At that time, and still in effect, CPT® provided a one-time $19 reimbursement for each qualified patient who signs up.
While this is not a significant amount overall, it does ensure a practice can recover the costs associated with starting a Remote Patient Monitoring program.
With Medek RPM, we handle the entire process for you in our proven Patient Onboarding System.
Once you agree to use Medek RPM, we design a custom postcard with your logo to encourage patients to use Remote Patient Monitoring. Then, our onboarding team calls each patient to explain the benefits and how the program works.
When chronic care patients agree to use Remote Patient Monitoring, our team sends them the right connected device and then calls the patient to help set up the device and train them on using the device. These services are covered by CPT® Code 99453 to enable you to bill and recover expenses.
